Just wondering if others here had an ORIC machine... I have 3 Atmos and 1 ORIC-1, Jasmin 1 and Jasmin 2, and two MCP-40.

I got my first Oric-1 in 1983, driving from Perth to Melbourne across the Nullabor .. a Christmas present from a well-connected family member who knew the Australian distributor. On the drive back home, in every hotel, I booted up that Oric-1 and taught myself to code.

I've got a pretty fat Atmos rig by now, and also a Telestrat in the collection.

There is so much great stuff going on with Oric at the moment - just in case, here's list of things a new Oric owner should know about:

1. http://oric.org - This is all Oric software, ever. Please register, get logged in, and contribute. The comments are awesome, and you will find the "Top 100 Software" very, very fun. Keep an eye out for Twilighte titles, as well as some of the classics of the 80's - the Oric had - *and still has* - its good stuff!

2. SD card and Tape/ROM peripherals are available, and once you add storage to an Oric, it becomes a very, very capable machine[1]. Look for Erebus and Cumulus and Cumana Reborn, or just check this thread:

3. Defense Force is the ultimate Oric destination, for devs and Oric hackers, alike. We've been going strong there for decades, have quite a few heroes and tributes and many other interesting things going on there.

4. Oric has won the BASIC 10-LINER competition for the last two years. It has been awesome to see it trump all other platforms on this brilliant, community competition.

Here are two Oric 10-liners that will give you arcade-level MOON LANDING and SNAKE TEMPLE games .. (arcade-like lunar lander and dungeon crawler!!)

Check out RAX other little games (he is awesome) on page 5 of this thread:

Keep an eye out on this competition, we Oric people are proud of our #1 position and are motivated to defend the platform every year! :) Defense Force thread: https://forum.defence-force.org/viewtopic.php?t=2239

[1] - I'm lucky enough to have, in the middle of an already well-stocked Oric shelf in my collection, another well-kitted and much loved/cared-for floppy-based Atmos rig that had been used by a motorbike club for 30 years .. for their member database, tucked away in a race-track shed .. but that's a thread for another time.

Also, if your Spanish is good, there is a thriving Oric scene there too .. and oddly enough, in the eastern block countries with PRAVETZ-8D, which gets some love in contemporary retro- circles, also ..

And we have a nice SDK to write in C: OSDK, although I still haven't finished the Linux port.

Yes, the OSDK is pretty good, it allows you to write BASIC, C or Assembly code, and mix it all together (as needed), which I find to be very, very cool.

There's also superlative support for the Oric in the 8bit-Unity/-Hub SDK (http://8bit-unity.com) which treats Oric as a first-class member of the platforms it supports, and also gives us a way to get the Oric online and playing multiplayer games with other platforms. Its truly astonishing to add an Oric to a C64 and an Atari machine on the 8-bit Hub, and play multiplayer games!

I got my Oric-1 in 1984. I gave it to a friend in the early 90s but I regretted it. I bought an Oric Atmos in 2003 from a member in a forum and still have it but I need to get that SD Card solution as using the tape interface isn't very reliable. One of the best keyboards on a micro of that era.
