MicroMac Performer and others for 68000 Compacts - Do they require the disabled CPU to boot?

Figured I'd just ask as it's been over seven years since this pic kicked off the clone game in the MLA Hacks Thread:



So is the stock 68000 CPU necessary under the Killy Klip in my Drexel Plus or could the Performer (or other, more complex accelerator) be plonked onto a socket installed in its place?


edit: I do realize the native processor will be required to boot the system for driver installation. But workarounds abound, including swapping out the Performer for the 68000 in the socket whenever necessary.
