I'm upgrading a Quicksilver G4 from 10.3 to 10.4. I don't have any DVDRs so I partitioned an external FW drive and restored the tiger install iso to a 10gb partition using the 10.3.9 disk utility.

when I hold option and boot off of the external drive I get kernel panics at the grey screen. Is there an obvious step I'm missing?

When you boot into 10.3 with the FW drive attached, and go into startup disk, does the FW drive appear as a valid boot drive? Is your partition scheme APM, MBR or GUID? It probably should be APM for PPC macs.

yes! It shows up as a bootable drive both in startup disk and in the boot menu when I hold option.
