So I have one of those older MacBook Pros, which I would still be using if it weren't for a sticky trackpad. Any advice on how to begin cleaning or refurbishing the trackpad?

Which model? The trackpad of my 2008 MacBook Pro was replaceable.

I believe I have a 2010. I'll double check.
